To commemorate the 2018 kickoff of the Around the World Embassy Tour, starting on May 5, this blog post is dedicated to all the cool markers you’ll encounter. Instead of settling for plaques or flags, these embassies rendered the symbols of their nations in stone or bronze. Each statue has its own story of how it came to be made, placed, and dedicated. The tour is a prime opportunity to see some of the most amazing sculptures in D.C. Use this interactive map to find even the most hidden likenesses of national heroes. But first, a few favorites:

The statue of Nelson Mandela on Massachusetts Avenue’s Embassy Row is one of the most famous in the world. The bronze sculpture in the likeness of the former President of South Africa raises a fist towards the air. Guess who it’s saluting right across the street?

Winston Churchill. The statue of the former Prime Minister of Britain is flashing a “peace” sign right back at Mandela. Churchill’s likeness, also in bronze, stands in a small clearing adjacent to the Embassy of Britain.

This famous statue of Mahatma Gandhi has its own park. It is placed in front of the Embassy of India on Massachusetts Ave. You don’t want to miss seeing this one in person.
